New Nelson homes almost ready for whānau

Local iwi last week blessed the new state homes in Stoke, ahead of tenants moving in.

The new development includes 8 one-bedroom, 14 two-bedroom and 4 three-bedroom homes. Kāinga Ora expects to settle on the purchase of the homes from developer Redwood Property Group in the coming weeks. Tenants will be able to move in after settlement is finalised.

Students from Broadgreen Intermediate and Nayland College were among the guests who attended the blessing. The Broadgreen Intermediate rōpu, Te Kohao o te Ngira, completed the blessing with a waiata while Nayland College students have created artwork for the new tenants who will be moving in.

Julia Campbell, Regional Director Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast, says Kāinga Ora is currently working to place people into the new homes. The new tenants will be people who are on the social housing register or existing Kāinga Ora tenants who need to move to a different home for a variety of reasons.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming whānau into these new homes as we know what a difference having a stable home can make to their lives. It’s heart-warming to see the support we’ve received from the local community and we’re so pleased that many of them were able to join us for the blessing,” she says.

“We’re also pleased that the families who will live here will benefit from the development’s great location, with transport routes, shops, schools and a playground right on their doorstep.”

Ms Campbell says the team speaks to people about their connections to the community and any support they may need to live well in their new home in the future during pre-housing conversations.

“After tenants have moved in, they’ll be assigned a Housing Support Manager and we’ll continue to support them, and their families, to settle in well into their new homes and communities.”
