Thousands of new homes possible for eleven regions through infrastructure investment

Eleven more regions throughout Aotearoa New Zealand are set to receive a share of the Government’s Infrastructure Acceleration Fund (IAF), Housing Minister Megan Woods announced in Hamilton today.
Critical infrastructure projects in Hamilton, Auckland, Tauranga, Christchurch, Kawakawa, Kaikohe, Westport, Upper Hutt, Waipukurau, Hokitika and Pahiatua will receive a share of $539.8 million, enabling thousands more homes to be built.
Kāinga Ora GM Commercial, Caroline McDowall, says this round of IAF funding is expected to enable around 16,600 new homes to be built over the next 10 to 15 years.
“By assisting councils and project partners to fund crucial infrastructure projects, we are able to support the growth of thriving communities for years to come,” she says.
“Intensification developments in Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga will ensure more people are closer to jobs, transport and amenities, while road upgrades in Westport mean the ability to enable new housing options away from flood-prone areas. In many areas important wastewater and stormwater upgrades will provide the necessary infrastructure to increase climate resilience and help address severe housing shortages.
“The IAF is just one way that Kāinga Ora works with both local and central government, mana whenua and the private sector to enable the increase of housing throughout Aotearoa.
“We are proud to administer the Government’s Infrastructure Acceleration Fund, and of the positive outcomes being achieved through this much-needed funding. To date, $916.3 million of IAF funding has been committed to core infrastructure projects in 27 New Zealand cities and towns. Through this funding, it is expected up to 35,000 homes could be delivered over the next 10-15 years.”
